How Many Chapters Are There in Class 9 Overall?

It varies by subject. Science has 13 chapters in its new "Exploration" textbook, Mathematics has 6 units spanning Number Systems through Statistics and Probability, and English is now taught from a single new textbook called Kaveri, structured by skill area rather than a fixed chapter count.

Mathematics Syllabus and Marks Distribution 

Class 9 Mathematics (Subject Code 041) is organised into 6 units, spread across the following weightage.

Algebra and Geometry together make up more than half the paper, so students who build strong basics in polynomials, linear equations, and circle theorems are setting themselves up well for both the exam and Class 10.

Science Syllabus and Marks Distribution 

Class 9 Science (Subject Code 086) has moved to a fully integrated structure covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science across 4 units and 13 chapters in the new Exploration textbook.

Three genuinely new topics have entered this year: Reproduction: How Life Continues, Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification, and an entirely new unit, Earth as a System. An optional Advanced Science paper is also available for students who want extra HOTS-level challenge — it does not replace the standard paper and its marks aren't added to the overall aggregate.

Social Science Syllabus Overview 

Class 9 Social Science (Subject Code 087) integrates History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics into one continuous course, taught across 13 themes in two parts — from Shaping of the Earth's Surface and Early Humans and Beginning of Civilisation through to Elections, From Ideas to Startups, and Smart Ways to Manage Your Finances.

Notably, this year's syllabus introduces practical financial literacy content — simple vs. compound interest, budgeting, savings instruments, and personal income tax — alongside the more traditional history, geography, and civics themes.

Gap note: CBSE's official 2026-27 Social Science curriculum document does not yet publish the theme-wise theory marks breakdown (it is marked "to be provided shortly" in the source PDF). What is confirmed is the internal assessment structure: Periodic Assessment (5 marks), Multiple Assessment (5 marks), Subject Enrichment/Project Work (5 marks), and Portfolio (5 marks), totalling 20 marks. Check the official PDF closer to the exam for the finalised unit-wise weightage before building a theme-by-theme revision plan.

English Syllabus and Marking Scheme

Class 9 English is now taught from a single new NCERT textbook called Kaveri, common to both R1 (first language) and R2 (second language) tracks, though the two are assessed with slightly different word limits and question splits.

Grammar this year covers sequence of tenses, modal auxiliaries, reported speech, conditional clauses (Type 1), subject-verb concord, determiners, and noun/relative clauses — all tested through editing, sentence rearrangement, and sentence transformation questions rather than isolated grammar drills.

Hindi Syllabus and Marking Scheme

Hindi is offered as R1 and R2, both following the same overall marks split.

Grammar sections cover word formation (prefixes and suffixes), parts of speech, sentence classification by meaning, and figures of speech (alankar). Creative writing includes paragraph writing, letter writing, dialogue writing, and either notice writing (R1) or picture-based writing (R2).

Optional and Elective Subjects 

Beyond the five main subjects, CBSE Class 9 students can choose from several skill and academic electives, including Computer Applications, Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Home Science, and Elements of Business, alongside a compulsory Computational Thinking & AI module folded into the core curriculum. Language options extend well beyond Hindi and English to over 35 languages, from Sanskrit and Urdu to Tamil, Bengali, and Punjabi.

How is Class 9 Assessed Overall? 

Across every main subject, the same broad philosophy applies: internal assessment is 20 marks, and it's designed to reduce dependence on a single high-stakes annual paper. Depending on the subject, internal assessment draws on some combination of:

1. Periodic pen-and-paper tests — short, scheduled tests through the year
2. Multiple assessment — quizzes, oral discussions, presentations, role play
3. Subject enrichment or practical work — lab activities, projects, fieldwork
4. Portfolio — a running collection of a student's work, reflections, and achievements across the year

Because this pattern repeats across subjects, a student who builds a habit of taking periodic tests seriously and keeping a tidy portfolio is effectively banking 20% of their final grade well before the annual exam even begins.
