The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), published annually by the Ministry of Education, is the most widely used benchmark for comparing IIT quality. Rankings consider teaching, learning resources, research output, graduation outcomes, and outreach.

Total IIT seats in India 2026

The JoSAA 2026 seat matrix has just been released (June 2, 2026) with a total of 18,951 IIT seats, but institute-wise breakdowns are not yet widely published. See the complete 2025 (JoSAA) institute-wise data clearly.

Notes:

• The JoSAA 2025 seat matrix confirmed that IITs offer 18,160 seats total, an increase in capacity across institutes. 
• For 2026, IITs are offering 18,951 seats total — an increase of 791 seats over 2025 — but the official institute-wise breakdown for 2026 has just been released, and individual IIT figures are not yet fully aggregated in public sources. 
• IIT Ropar's large jump (+216) in 2025 reflects new programme additions. IIT Gandhinagar shows a slight reduction due to programme restructuring.
• Seats include both gender-neutral and female supernumerary seats as counted in the official JoSAA matrix.

How to Get Admission in IIT B.Tech? 

Admission to B.Tech programs at any IIT follows a strictly merit-based, multi-stage process. There are no management quota seats or donations — your JEE Advanced rank is the only criterion.

Step-by-Step IIT Admission Process

Step 1 — Check Eligibility

You must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. You should have secured at least 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST) or be in the top 20th percentile of your board. First-time JEE Advanced attempts are capped at two, within two consecutive years.

Step 2 — Clear JEE Main

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year (January and April sessions). Only students who qualify JEE Main — typically the top 2.5 lakh ranks — are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Check the NTA official website for exact cutoffs each year.

Step 3 — Qualify JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs on a rotational basis. It consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), both mandatory. Your JEE Advanced rank determines which IIT and branch you can access via JoSAA counselling.

Step 4 — Prepare Strategically

JEE Advanced tests deep conceptual understanding, not rote learning. Students who build their foundation from NCERT — particularly Class 11 Maths and Class 12 Maths — before moving to advanced problem sets consistently outperform those who skip basics.

Step 5 — Register and Appear for Both Exams

Monitor the official JEE Main and JEE Advanced notification windows carefully. Missing the registration deadline means missing the entire year.

Step 6 — Check Results and Cutoffs

Results are published on the official JEE Advanced website. Verify your score, rank category, and whether you meet the minimum qualifying marks for counselling.

Step 7 — Participate in JoSAA Counselling

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) runs centralised counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After JEE Advanced results, register on the JoSAA portal, fill in your course-institute preferences in order, and lock choices before the deadline.

Step 8 — Seat Allotment and Acceptance

Seats are allotted over multiple rounds based on your rank and preferences. If allotted a seat, pay the acceptance fee within the deadline. You may upgrade in later rounds or freeze your seat.

Step 9 — Document Verification and Reporting

Report to your allotted IIT with original documents (marksheets, category certificate if applicable, medical certificate) for final admission confirmation.
