JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria – Check Whether You are Eligible

Candidates aspiring to appear for JEE Main 2026 must clearly understand whether they meet the eligibility requirements set by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Eligibility criteria play a crucial role, as candidates who fail to meet even one condition may be disqualified at later stages of admission.

JEE Main 2026 is a national-level undergraduate engineering entrance examination conducted for admission into NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and other centrally/state-funded technical institutes. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Overview

The eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2026 include the following aspects:

  • Nationality
  • Age limit
  • Year of passing Class 12
  • Number of attempts

Each of these aspects is explained in detail below.

Nationality & Citizenship

The following candidates are eligible to apply for JEE Main 2026:

  • Indian Nationals
  • NRIs (Non-Resident Indians)
  • OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India)
  • PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin)
  • Foreign Nationals

Admission for foreign and OCI candidates is subject to the rules of the respective institutes.

Age Limit for JEE Main 2026

✅ No Age Limit

As per the latest NTA guidelines, there is no age limit to appear for JEE Main 2026.

Candidates of any age can apply, provided they meet the educational qualification criteria.

Year of Appearance in Class 12 (or Equivalent)

Candidates must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  • Candidates who passed Class 12 or equivalent in 2024 or 2025
  • Candidates appearing for Class 12 in 2026

⚠️ Candidates who passed Class 12 before 2024 are not eligible for JEE Main 2026.

Subjects Required in Qualifying Examination

Candidates must have studied at least 5 subjects in their Class 12 or equivalent examination.

For B.E./B.Tech

  • Language
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • One of the following: Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject
  • Any other subject

For B.Arch / B.Planning

  • Language
  • Physics
  • Mathematics (compulsory)
  • One of the following: Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject
  • Any other subject

Number of Attempts for JEE Main 2026

A candidate can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years.

Since JEE Main is conducted twice a year, a candidate can appear for up to 6 attempts in total.

JEE Main Eligibility Marks (Class 12 Criteria)

For admission to NITs, IIITs & GFTIs

  • General / OBC / EWS: Minimum 75% marks OR Top 20 percentile in Class 12
  • SC / ST / PwD: Minimum 65% marks

📌 This criterion is required only during counselling/admission, not while filling the JEE Main application form.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Droppers (2026)

Droppers must fulfill the same eligibility conditions as fresh candidates.

Eligibility Summary for Droppers

  • Year of passing Class 12: 2024 or 2025
  • Minimum subjects: 5
  • Number of attempts: Maximum 3 years
  • Minimum marks: As per category norms (75% / 65%)

Equivalent Qualifying Examinations Accepted

The following examinations are considered equivalent to Class 12:

  • Class 12 Board Examination
  • Intermediate or 2-year Pre-University Exam
  • Final exam of 2-year NDA Joint Services Wing
  • NIOS Senior Secondary Examination
  • Any recognized foreign board equivalent approved by AIU

Important Points to Remember

  • Diploma holders are not eligible for admission through JEE Main to NITs/IIITs
  • Improvement exams must be given for all 5 subjects
  • Best performance of improvement or original exam is considered
